Reintroducing Cows Milk Protein (CMP)

Consider appropriate SETTING for  reintroducing CMP

Consider appropriate TIMING for  reintroducing CMP

  1. CMP free diet until 9-12 mth old or for at least 6 mth

  2. Dietetic support required

  3. Schedule a PLANNED CHALLENGE

No current ECZEMA

No acute symptoms

Current ECZEMA

H/O acute symptoms

Initial HOME CHALLENGE

Refer to paediatrician with an interest in allergy

Check:

  1. serum specific IgE or

  2. Skin prick test to cows milk

Home Challenge for a formula fed baby with mild/moderate “delayed” (non-IgE) CMA
 Do not challenge if the infant is unwell, if airways are compromised or  eczema is flared up
 Do not challenge if the infant is receiving medication that may adversely affect the gut e.g. antibiotics
 Do  not introduce any other new foods during the milk allergy

 Record the oral intake, stool pattern or other signs during the challenge
 If signs return STOP THE CHALLENGE and refer to a dietitian
 If no signs return it is safe to consume cow’s milk based formula and milk containing products
 COWS MILK IS NOT A SUITABLE DRINK FOR INFANTS UNDER 12 MTH OLD
